What is IV sedation

IV(Intravenous) Sedation also known as Sleep dentistry or Conscious sedation is an  alternative to General anaesthesia or Nitrous Oxide (Happy gas).

The sedation is administered by a Specialist Anaesthetist, allowing you to drift off into a relaxed sleep, totally unaware of passing time and the dental procedure being performed, and returning with no recollection of the treatment.

The sedation drugs usually of the anti-anxiety variety are administered into the bloodstream and within 15 seconds you are asleep. After a short recovery period, you can comfortably go home in the company of a responsible adult.

IV Sedation is perfectly suited for both adults and children (8 years and 20kg+ ) , and the rapid onset, short recovery and affordability means it can even be used for short cases such as single tooth extractions or even tooth cleaning.

▼    Advantages of IV Sedation
  • IV Sedation is the method of choice if you don’t want to be aware of the procedure. Our Intravenous Sedation is NOT twilight sedation but an actual anaesthesia and is provided by one of our 4 regular Specialist Anaesthetists.  The onset of action is very rapid, couple of minutes, and the drug dosage and level of sedation can be tailored to meet the individuals needs.
  • A variety of different drugs administered by a Specialist Anaesthetist provide a relaxed sleep and the amnesia for the procedure.
  • Effective time management is a benefit. IV sedation allows the dentist to perform a maximum amount of treatment in a minimum amount of time.
  • IV sedation does NOT require you to be an inpatient of a hospital or Day Surgery which greatly reduces your “wait time” before the procedure and also reduces the overall cost of your treatment, in fact Medicare provides a generous rebate for sedation.
